Bio-Identical Hormones

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

As we age our hormone levels decline. Both men and women experience hormonal declines. For women, the decline is most noted at menopause. Men, on the other hand may have a much more insidious decline and have their own version of menopause, called andropause.

One perspective is that the decline in hormones is “normal”. Well, dying is “natural” too but we certainly want to delay that as long as possible! I’ve had several patients tell me that their doctor says that their hormones are “normal” or “fine” for their age.

Why Bio-identical Hormones Make So Much Sense

Dr. Khalid Mahmud, writes in the journal of Gynecological Endocrinology, “Menopausal women are deficient in estrogen, progesterone, and frequently in testosterone and DHEA. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in the United States has generally consisted of one or two agents, typically equine estrogen and medroxyprogesterone, with increased risk of heart attack, stroke, dementia, and breast cancer [WHI trials].”

He goes on to state, “Bio-identical hormones [chemically endogenous hormones] have gained popularity and can be mixed according to physician’s orders by compounding pharmacists in the United States. However, there is little published information about the use of such hormones. This paper reports a 12 plus months follow up on 189 patients who were administered natural estrogen plus
progesterone with or without DHEA or testosterone according to a rationalized protocol described later.”

“Sixty percent of the patients, who had gained weight during menopause, lost an average of 14.8 lbs.”

Dr. Mahmud found that with the use bioidentical hormones instead of the synthetic and horse hormones used in traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is much safer. He states, “Complications described with traditional HRT did not develop in this group of patients. These findings point out a need for larger controlled trials of similar protocols in the management of menopause.” Thus, hormone therapy when done correctly can have significantly less with risk with many more immediate and potential long-term benefits.

“Testosterone therapy improves arousability, sexual desire and fantasy, frequency of sexual activity and orgasm, and satisfaction and pleasure from the sexual act.”

You may have joint pain, low energy, and a declining libido which could also be considered “normal” for your age. Go enjoy it, right!? However, NORMAL is not OPTIMAL and there are many treatments we can do to optimize your hormone levels and prevent and improve many of the health problems associated with aging. Getting old is normal, feeling old is optional.
